Vocabulary
- Popular Sovereignty-A doctrine was is created because the people needed to decide if the United States was to become a country free of slaves or not.
- Federalism- A government where the powers are shared between all government personals.
- Separation of Powers- The government is limited in and person, it is separated into 3 branches.
- Checks and Balances- A system that assures that no person has too much control over another. It forces things to get done in cooperation.
- Judicial Review- A courts power to stop any act or override anything that is considered unconstitutional.
- Limited Government- Government that practices limits every bodies power by making a constitution.
- Bill of Attainder- One single person or a groups of people that are pronounced guilty without holding a trial and they receive a punishment.
- Elastic Clause- Allows congress to pass all law in the enumerated list of powers that are not specified in the constitution.
- Supremacy Clause-This allows federal laws to have power of state laws. Judges in each state are bound under this.
- Writ of Habeus Corpus- An order that a prisoner makes to a judge to stand before him and declare he made a legal error, is innocent, and should be released from custody.
- Ex Post Facto- Laws that are punishments for people who are charge for doing something before it was made illegal.
- Due Process-A constitutional agreement that says that no law that is ever made will be unreasonable or ridiculous. No one is denied their rights and if they are accused of a crime, they will stand against the accuser.
- Expressed Powers-Power that are plainly expressed and stated in the constitution.
- Implied Powers- Rights in the constitution that are not stated, but still exist.
- Full Faith and Credit- All states must respect laws and judgement of each other.
- Privileges and Immunities- All citizens in all states are equal.
- Extradition-The transfer from one state or country to another, an accused criminal.
- Republic- A government in which the power is in the citizens and they can elect a president to represent them.
